FILM: Trailer Trove: Oscar Winning Directors

*Posted August 28, 2008*

This week we are going to size up some upcoming films from some high profile directors. First up is the defending champs, the Coens. Their new film is entitled Burn After Reading, about a disk containing the memoirs of a CIA agent (John Malkovich) that ends up in the wrong hands of hapless gym employees (Brad Pitt and Frances McDormand) who try to sell it. Also stars Smug Clooney. On the other end of Oscar season is Ron Howard's Frost/Nixon, about the legendary interviews between David Frost (Michael Sheen) and resigned President Richard Nixon (Frank Langella). This is based on the play that these guys did. So who wins? Well both directors are releasing more of their signature stuff. The Coens do quirky cool like no one else, and Ron Howard knows compelling drama. I'm tempted to go with Frost/Nixon because of it's interesting subject and supporting cast (Sam Rockwell, Oliver Platt, Kevin Bacon), but every time I watch the Burn After Reading trailer I can't stop laughing. Point, Coens.
