SMALL TALK WITH DAVE: TOP FIVE songs from HBO’s Flight of the Conchords, Series One:

*Posted August 14, 2008*

For a while I’ve been trying to get the webmaster here to put some of these clips on the site, but he gets so picky about this stuff.Well, we’re doing it this week whether he likes it or not.If you like these clips then please look up some episodes online (or even just other clips). It’s the tongue in cheek story of “New Zealand’s fourth most popular folk-parody duo” as they try to make it in New York. The best part of the show doesn’t even appear in these clips. If you’ve seen the show then you’ve probably guessed the part I’m talking about is Murray, the band’s manager who works at the New Zealand consulate in New York during the day. Each clip will be preceded by a brief description, so enjoy what I have here then scoot on down to the top ten that I compiled this week.

Bret You’ve Got It Goin On

In this episode, Bret (the bearded one) develops low self esteem after seeing some band photos, thinking he looks tiny.Jemaine (the cooler one) tries to cheer him up with a tune that he wrote.

Hiphopopotamus vs. Rhymenoceros

The band members come up with rapping aliases to appear tougher on the street, and when two guys try and mug them, they break into song to ward them off.(they get mugged anyway).

Most Beautiful Girl In The Room

The first song in the pilot episode, this one introduces you to the type of humor they convey through song while at their mate’s party.

Business Time

Jemaine is at the laundromat, bumps into the girl from before and day dreams they’re live-in life together.

If You’re Into It

Bret gets a girlfriend in an episode and wants to serenade her with a song that details his love for her. After a corny first draft with lyrics like “I would climb the highest mountain,”Jemaine helps him understand that he actually wouldn’t do any of that shit for her, and helps him come up with a version filled with more realistic lyrics.
